    Violet Tolhurst and Kate Lucetta Live Music

    Violet Tolhurst is a young singer/songwriter who has been refining her craft with Darebin’s Decibels Youth Music Program. Her music is a chill blend of acoustic guitar and folk sounds.  Kate Lucetta is a part-time receptionist who would much rather be a full-time musician. She plays soulful bluesy pop songs about the everyday, the mundane and the extraordinary.

    Hear from three brilliant Australian feminist writers, Jane Gilmore, Leena van Deventer, Roj Amedi at this special discussion celebrating women’s voices and International Women’s Day. 

    Hosted by Monica Dux this event will also feature the launch of the 2018 Feminist Writers Festival program. Attendees will get a sneak peek at the program for the Melbourne festival, to be held in May, and have the first chance to purchase discounted festival tickets!

    We Were Here Documentary Screening

    We Were Here documents the coming of what was called the ‘Gay Plague’ in early 1980s San Francisco. It illuminates the profound personal and community issues raised by the AIDS epidemic. Focussing on five individuals with diff erent vantage points as caregivers, activists, researchers, as friends and lovers of the afflicted, and as people with AIDS themselves, the interviewees share stories which are not only intensely personal, but which also illuminate the much larger themes of that era.

  • Making History: Your Family Legacy

    Making History: Your Family Legacy

    When: 17 Mar 2018, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM
    Location: Northcote Library
    Post-war migrants who arrived in Australia in the 50s and 60s are a generation that is departing. Despite hardship, deprivation and sacrifice this generation were significant contributors to Australia’s progress and diversity, supporting their children to become professionals, academics, politicians, artists and successful business people. Their departure should not leave a vacuum.

    Digital technology allows families to work together to record these experiences for posterity. Developed as part of a project funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, My Life: My Legacy is a practical manual which explores simple ways to digitally record your family’s history as a valuable legacy to your descendants. Virginia Orfanos will share tips from this manual and some of the rich cultural heritage captured in this project as well the ongoing ‘Greeks of Northcote’ project, funded by the City of Darebin.

    Darebin City Council Racism Inquiry

    Young East African residents in Darebin have created a short advocacy video of their everyday struggle with racial discrimination. Join us for a screening of this video, followed by a panel discussion and interactive experience exploring the importance of social solidarity, belonging and community participation.

    Youth panellists include Abdirahman, Osob, Mariyan and Ahmed. Facilitated by Eugenia Flynn, writer, arts worker and community organiser.

    Eugenia identifies as Aboriginal, Chinese Malaysian and Muslim.

    The Road Safety for Seniors presentation helps older road users remain safe for as long as possible.
